There's a stone circle in the grounds of an old house near me.  The land is due to be developed into a retirement village (!) and I wondered if anyone out there can help me - how can I tell how old the circle is, who can I ask to look at it, and if we find it is really old can we stop the development?  It's not listed in Aubrey Burl's book, but then I have been to a couple of sites that aren't.   Many thanks.

It's in Hampshire, between Southampton and Winchester, grid ref approx SU 466 199.  I think it is probably a fake but you never know.

I don't think this can be the Twyford circle as the grid ref is a couple of miles to the south in Bishopstoke next to Eastleigh. The Twyford site has been long buried ever since Saxon times.

What Jim says is true - the circle is in Bishopstoke in the grounds of an old house called The Mount.  I have a photo on my desk from 1909 which shows the circle in the grounds, so if it is a fake, it's not a truly modern one.

I've just been browsing and came across this interesting but old(ish) thread. Any updates on the retirement homes, or any more information on the putative stone circle?

David

Obviously with the credit crunch, no building has taken place, but now the whole site, including the old house and other derelict buildings on the site, is falling into disrepair and being vandalised, and becoming overgrown.
