OK,

There are alot of lines. If we take a much smaller number of monuments - the stone circles and henges in the peak district (22) these are also aligned with high accuracy. Diagram at oldstonelines.co.uk .Coincidence? I don't think so.

Rob , I couldn't see the peak district map . What is the maximium number of aligned sites from the 22 ?

Thanks Rob , found it , the maximum number aligned looks like 3 with one possible 4 , the scale looks quite small and it would be good to put names to circles .

Rob , Finally worked out what was what in the diagram , a mention of the Bull Ring or Arbor Low would have made all the difference , the "Memory Map " cursor info wasn't much help . You have 22 sites mentioned ,Burl list 11 stone circles including Arbor Low add the Bull Ring 3 "new" circles and Hobs Hursts House where do the other 7 sites fit in ? The one line that looked like it may be of interest , (it had a possible 4 sites ) was Arbor Low to Hordron Edge but when investigated there are no stone circles on this bearing , maybe they are 2 of the 3 "new" ones . Could you explain please .

George,

My copy of Burl's book lists 22 circles on p. 343. I think he wrote a much smaller book with a similar title as well which may be causing the confusion. Some of those he lists are only rumoured from long ago and do not have a proper map reference. The 3 new ones are listed in "The henges, stone circles and ring cairns of the peak district" by J Barnatt. I will post the map references tonight.
I misunderstood your first question. I thought you meant how many of the 22 were in some sort of alignment. You are right. They are nearly all in lines of 3.

Thanks Rob , there is a problem with using 6 figure grid refs in that the accuracy can be out by as much as 140 metres  . Hers some examples of the 10 figures for a few of the above .
Arbor Low SK 16014 63582
Bull Ring SK 07849 78240
Wet Withens SK 22545 78997
I'll try to find more accurate refs for those I don't already have  ,via Magic and the OS but they may not be recorded .

George,

I can probably get them all to 4 figures from Barnatts book. I thought that an accuracy of 100 metres or so over 10 miles would be pretty good for stone age science but I will update as many as I can to 4 figures.

Rob ,
if you go for the lesser accuracy then it gets incredibly difficult to prove the case . The potential to arrive at similar  results , or better , from random sites would be huge . Another problem is function , why would they do that ?

OK here are the map references from Barnatt - I notice he says Top of Riley is no longer there and does not give a real grid reference. As to function I don't know. But I don't know why they built henges or stone circles either.  I think there are several possible reasons but it is important to establish if it is actually true first.

Arbor Low SK 16036355
Barbrook 1 SK 27857558
BarBrook 2 SK 27757581
Barbrook 3 SK 28337729
Broomhead 1 SK 23819644 most northerly
Bull Ring SK 07847823 most westerly
Doll Tor SK 23856287
Froggat Edge SK 24957678
Lawrence Field SK 25247972
Moscar Moor SK 22118454
Nine Ladies SK 24916349
Ninestone Close SK 22546264
Offerton Moor SK 21288054
Park Gate SK 28056851
Hordron SK 21518684

That tightens up the accuracy ,a bit . Would you like me to check the accuracy of any of the alignments  ?

Well I think for their time they are very accurate. In fact I don't know how they could have done it over terrain where they could not see some of the circles from the others in the line. If you want to give your opinion on the accuracy in general go ahead.
