Firstly I'm new here so hello to everyone and I wonder if you can help me...

I was mountaineering in Wales (Tryfan to be exact) when we came across this shaped stone which at least to my untrained eye appeared to be a spearhead of some sort. After doing some brief research online it seems unlikely that its a spearhead but I'm still convinced it is a tool of some sort.

It is just over 11cm's in length and approx  3 1/2 cm's at its widest point. What really intrigues me though is the almost perfectly circular hole that has been bored into the main flat edge of the stone.

Please find some pictures below and hopefully you can help shed a little light on what it may be.

Kind regards

Jay

Hi Jay,
it looks like a fishing spear head to me.
the hole is for a string to retrieve the spear from the water was once it has been thrown.

I hope this helps,

Hey Pete thank you for your reply.

That certainly seems possible given it was found half way up Tryfan where I know there have been many finds of seashells and such. Looking at the image you have shown makes me think that the one I have found was possibly rejected or never finished by the maker for some reason, as the hole does not go all the way through the stone.

Do you have any idea how old it may be or whether or not a museum or something may be interested in having it?

it would certainly be worth taking to a museum for their opinion.
I am not an expert but I'd agree with your idea that it could be a tool that was never finished,
Let us know how you get on and thanks for posting the photos,
good luck,

Hi JayX....

It's many years since I went up Tryfan, but I don't recall any ponds or lakes, or even spots suitable for making a camp, apart from near The Cannon Stone. I don't recall any pastures either just a jumble of rock, so herdsmen and shepherds would be a bit thin on the ground.

Mind you, I once found a house brick on the top of Kinder, so it's surprising what gets lugged up the hills.

I'm intrigued.

Hey Shiny thanks for your reply,

There are a few places on and around Tryfan suitable for camp as you said The Cantilever would be one but there are also I giant set of carved stone stairs which for lack of a better description look like something Dwarven from The Lord Of The Rings which are sheltered on both sides and would make a good camp.

As far as lakes and rivers etc on Tryfan I have only ever found small streams running off the mountain. Of course there is Llyn Ogwen at the base and various other small lakes. A quick search online showed a small lake called Llyn Bochlwyd or "Australia Lake" which I personally am not familiar with at least in name but think I must have been there at some point as I have climbed all the various routes on Tryfan over the years...

I may see if I can find a local expert in the field or a body which deals with these sorts of things more specifically. Its certainly peaking my interest.
