My name is Richard Neil MacLeod and several years ago I went on a vacation to the Western Islands of Scotland to discover my family roots at the still-occupied, ancestral Dunvegan castle on the Isle of Skye. There I discovered that I also had ancient roots in the islands to the west out among the ancient standing stones. My adventure set me on a quest to find the purpose of the old stones with which I now fell a deep affinity, like a past memory. I marvel at how so many of the five thousand year old structures, even though mostly gone due to flood, earthquake, war, stone mining and other sadness, still stand today. I found the Stones of Callanish on the Isle of Lewis nearly perfect even though only lightly stuck in the ground as if Mother Nature was protecting them.
On my arrival in Scotland and having a Scottish name, the Scottish Tourist Bureau recommend that I stay in a bed and breakfast with those who lived locally of the same name. I found this to be truly helpful because I learned far more about my heritage than I normally would have. Out on the outer island I discovered that my people had been living on the islands for thousands of years and had family memories of “Their Stones.” I was told many things and among them that the callanish stones were of a spiritual nature and formed a Star. Although with my background is science and engineering I had no interest at the time in things religious or spiritual, but I did listen politely. However, I had been showing some photos of the stones I had gathered from the Internet that some had never seen before, and this inadvertent act seemed to have convinced some that I was greatly interested in knowing more about the stones.
On my return to Oregon I had a change of heart and began passionately investigating the old stones and also this thing called Spirituality. I started writing and my yet unpublished book series I call “The Light,” is the result of my investigations. I would like to share with you herein a sample of what I have learned so far.

The Stones of Callanish.
The first photo on the left is an aerial view of Callanish thanks to the book, Scotland BC Historic    Scotland.   Edinburgh: HMSO.
From the air the Callanish One looks like a 5,000 year old Celtic Cross.
The name Callanish means “place of pilgrimage”

The second photo is the same aerial view with a line that I penciled in around the main part of the stones.
In drawing a line around the main stones a human figure emerges. I drew another line (Top of photo), across the two large stones that represent the Earth. The human figure then appears to be rising above the Earth. The largest stone in the circle is where the heart would be so I call it the heart stone.

The third and fourth photos are of a drawing I found on the Internet. The one on the left is the original detailed drawing of callanish. On the right is my modification of the same drawing where I drew in a fire pit. I also drew arrows to show how a fire in that position will light up all the stones from the position I labeled the Earth, thus creating the Star of Callanish above the Earth. The sketch is thanks to stones of wonder.com/ Callanis.htm/Stephen Witehead.

The Star of Callanish.
The results of the fire at night would make the stones appear like the last photo. The position and width of the fire is important because a stone of particular size and shape blocks the light causing a shadow down the center of the avenue, thus creating two avenues of light, with the one on the right leading to the heart-stone. Also other gaps were made in between the stones where other shadows did appear. I also penciled in the personal notes. The photo below thanks to Scotland BC Historic Scotland Edinburgh: HMSO.

I ask you to just weigh the technical facts presented above for what they are. I believe the Stones of callanish are an open door to the understanding of the stones and also people who built them. Please get hold of some photos and detailed drawings of the callanish stones and draw in the lines and arrows in for yourself because much more is to be learned and this is only a start. Much greater information and detail needs to be added. I ask for your help in this regard. I am sorry I could not get the photos in the text or in the right order.
