Just joined StonePages. I am a sandstone carver
from Oberlin Ohio USA looking to convers with any one building or planning on building a stone circle.I have several large stones gathered and will spend a few more years getting about 15 stone weighing about 1-3 tons each. I am currently living in P.R.China until October 2003.

Home is Oberlin Ohio USA. Currently living in Shanghai P.R.C. until October 2003. The only things I
know about stones in England is what I have read.
I WILL visit someday.

All good things to you Bruce. I am happy to greet you.
I am very excited to talk to you about stone circles. I have felt a deep desire to build a stone circle for sometime now I have begun with small stones to get familiar with the dynamics of stone moving and erecting. I hope to someday move a 1 ton stone or more. I would love to discuss the joy of this karmayoga with you. PLease respond as soon as you are able.
I would like to know how you move such great big boulders.

Hello Narahari,
When I move large stones it takes time and patience. Slowly, using levers, blocking material
and sometimes a hydraulic jack I have found I can move stones up to three tons by myself. Extreme
care is taken not to get injured. I think about
how to move the stone and this sometimes takes
longer than the actual move. The stones I use
are all old sandstone building material. I would like to have some natural boulders also but they seem difficult to find. Good luck to you and keep in touch.   Bruce

Bruce, please tell me how far you  move these stones. Do you use a truck to move them to site or do you drag them over land? If over land how is the terrain?

I can appreciate the time spent thinking things through as I have regretted my preparation a couple of times so far. I would like to see some pictures of your accomplishments if you have them. Good luck to you and keep in touch.

Richard,
I use a truck to move them to my home. I can not
drive to the back so I use 5 foot sections of an old wooden telephone pole as rollers to move them to the rear where I will build the circle. I often employ one or more of my three strong sons to help me if they are available. The project is on hold until 2003 because I am in PRC until then.
Use great care, thought and patience when moving large stones by yourself. These things take time, sometimes inch by inch. Keep in touch.

Bruce, good luck with your project, how are you proposing to lay the circle out? and to what design?

I was lucky enough to be taught how to lay out a circle using a lode-stone(magnet), stakes and string. However this was back in 1963, but if you are interested I will try to find my notes.

Here in the UK the Pagan Federation and others are being given a new site for worship. There are various suggestions for the land, some of them including a new stone circle. I will keep this BB informed of progress.

Molyneux,
I do not have a lot of room at the back of my property in Oberlin, Ohio,USA. I intend my circle to be about 40 yards in diameter. It will consist of 10-11 stones of varying height with a few close enough togehter to place a lintel across.
the circle will be laid out simply with a stake in the center and a rope to locate each stone. I will have one location to mark the equinox be it summer or spring or winter. I would love to hear your theory on the placement of stones for a circle. Good luck to you. Bruce

Hello Bruce,

I don't know who built it, but there is recent (last 50 years?) stone circle near behind an obelisk on a hill near Montacute House in Somerset. I discovered it quite by accident (and you have to be on top of the hill to see it), but it is fantastic. I can email a photo if you wish.

Hey Hawkesbury, I would love to see a photo of the recent stone circle you talk about. Send it to me at sprtybruno@netscape.net.
