Can someone tell me who exactly the Picts were? Where they came from, when, to where? How they were different from other migrating peoples? In all my reading, I've never seen a straightforward explanation of this. Many thanks. (Please email me at mewhite@worldnet.att.net)

According to The Oxford Illustrated Prehistory of Europe (edited by Barry Cunliffe) the Picts was a loose federation of tribes that lived in Scotland. The name "Picts" meaned "the painted ones" and refered to their tradition of body painting.
We must keep in mind that there is little known about most of those so called people or tribes that lived Europe 2000 years ago. A lot of the names we talk about today was probably just very loose federations that changed rapidly over time. Those that was documented by Romans is of course a bit more known, but we must keep in mind that most of that documentation was probably just political propaganda.
