I am a bit curious to know if folks here have visited any special places at the summer solstice and maybe seen an interesting sunrise or sunset.
I spended that day walking around in the landscape carrying a 2-metre metal pole during a thunderstorm. *grin*
Well, it wasn't that strange, and it doesn't have anything to do with the summer solstice actually. I was measuring some passage graves using GPS together with a professional archaeologist. Sadly the weather was so bad so we had to hide in the car a lot. The rain was sometimes extremely hard and there was a lot of lightnings so it was quite dangerous. Finally we retreated into the local museum and spended some time in their archives. While being there the house was struck by lightning, which broke down most telephones at the museum. The following day I read in the local papers that some football players was struck by lightning while playing. Thanks God they survived!
Well, this all happened at the summer solstice. I hope that you have more nice stories to tell about stunning sunrises over some ancient stones.

Hi Gunnar,
solstice at Avebury was wet and windy (as at Stonehenge) but there were hundreds of people here. The next night I stayed up for the sunrise to view a comet (didn't see it!)
There was a beautiful sunrise over Avebury.
I posted a Panorama at http://www.stoneheng...Qtvravesol.html
I saw 4 people there and 3 of them were still asleep!

From the Gazette & Herald (22/6/00)
An emergency rescue operation was mounted at Silbury Hill during the solstice celebrations amid fears a reveller had fallen down the 50ft shaft which has recently opened on the landmark.
A 14-man rescue team from Wiltshire Fire Brigade's Rope Rescue Unit was alerted early on Wednesday morning, after the man had been missing for one-and-a-half hours, but he was found enjoying a nap under scaffolding.
Leading fireman Peter Crow, from Chippenham, said "They had a group hug and then everyone went away."
