Its been a while so I thought a reminder for new members was in order.
The ritual landscape of Thornborough and the archaeology it contains is being destroyed by quarrying - Tarmac Northern Ltd are keen to destroy as much of Thornborough that is not scheduled as possible.
They wish to leave behind a denuded set of henges - raised 5-7m above the natural gound level and surrounded by lakes and marginal land.

It is not too late to send a letter of objection to North Yorkshire County Council:

Thornborough is probably the largest single ritual site in Britain - English Heritage call it the most important ancient site between Stonehenge and the Orkneys, Tarmac call it the ideal place to have a gravel quarry, I disagree.
Tarmac have recently applied for planning permission at Ladybridge Farm (henge the letter of objection) but their evaluation appears to have been designed not to locate much archaeology at all on the site. Tarmac have already bought Thornborough Moor, the land that the henges sit on, including two pf the henges and they are to apply to have Thornborough made into a preferred area for quarrying.
Help us put a stop to this.

The petition has now hit 5,000 signatures - a pretty clear sign of public support for such a little known site.
Lets make this statement a total rejection - can all of us make a concerted effort to get more signatures on it. Have you asked your E-buddies? Do you know any archaeologists that might sign now that so many others have? How about your family? Surprisingly few family groups have signed, if everyone just got another five signatures that would be 25,000 signatures. Come on peeps - the Thornborough team have been plugging away at this for ages. Show us some support - Please.
