I have local knowledge of certain ancient stones in a graveyard associated with a 12th century preceptory in the Bathgate hills at Torphichen.
There are several stones with menorah carved in relief and others with strange symbols involving cross bones/ropes/angels etc. I have photographs which I can send to any email. The menorah are probably associated with the hospitallers but they have been reused as there are later inscriptions (masonic) on the reverse side incised with apparently more recent dates from 18th century.
These stones are in a church graveyard with has been built onto the side of the preceptory ruin.
I have enquired of the active knights templars locally but tI have been informed that three is no knowledge of these.
Ther is however a known set of eight stones arranged around the site at about one mile radius which oral tradition has that these were refuge stones within which fugitives would be under the protection of the templars.
Can anyone shed more light on this?
Best regards,
