Something I have meant to post on this is, if you go to cot valley in Cornwall, which you reach through the town of St Just, there is a natural outcrop of egg stones.
The national trust now run this site, where the fields are been eaten away by the sea, the whole face of the cliffs are full of perfect egg shaped rocks.
They are said to be from a previous sea level, if you go when it has been raining they litterally pop out of the cliff face with a strange plopping sound, it doesn't pay to stand under the cliff face when this is happening.
I have often wondered what people through time would have made of this, I am sure they would have linked them to re-birth from the earth ?

Hi Peregrine,

that's correct, the prehistoric people in the Americas (especially the Maritime Archaic on the eastern seaboard north of Maine used to use stones to weight down nets.

They were also used in Oceania by the Maori people (and their ancestors).

I wrote about the many uses of carved stone balls - and listed all the previous suggested functions (which you can find in Evans/Marshall/Edmonds)... fishing weights is possible, because there is a maritime connection.

The shell object is interesting, and the book "Symbols of Power at the Time of Stonehenge" does indeed focus on Neolithic symbolism and the association of the spiral with Neolithic/Bronze Age images, and it's possible meanings. It is one of the best books you can get.

Hi Kevin B. That's a really interesting post...

In New Zealand, South Island, I saw some amazing natural features which were also washing out of the coastline - they are called the "Moeraki Boulders", they are septarian concretions. I have some photos I last time I was working there, but there are good online sites:-

and see:-

Cool huh? do you have any pics of the boulders from Cornwall ??
