As you wish, Stonecarver. We can discuss dowsing quite separately from any list-making or typology of megalithic objects. Here`s something from my practice; just to spark the thread.
Aside ley-line tradition, there are many other approaches to the same(!?) problem. Some of them call for training of man`s personal sensitivity to enigmatic impulses from the environment. For landscapes transformed by megalithic ideas (Britain, Ireland, Brittany, etc.), one can generally state the coincidence of the "source"(!?)of such impulses with some characteristic stone man-made structures. And what those impulses really do to us!? Well; from my practice comes out that they as if "tune" and stabilize our minds and bodies at a particular level of our living activity.

As I live in a marginal zone of the old "Megalithic Commonwealth" (Mälardalen; middle of Sweden), I`m naturally interested in answering this basic question : - Which was the first; an invisible source of those "bioenergetic" impulses or man-made stone constructions, aligned with other similar ones in a ley line!? But maybe the original thesis of the ley-liners is now changed!? As far as I can remember, ley lines were supposed to arise first through human activity!?

But then how should I explain to myself such phenomena like those...First, there`s a St.Olof`s church in Sigtuna (south of Uppsala, Sweden), built by English missionaries in Xth century from big granite stones, containing high percentage of rose quartz crystals. In the absid, where altar used to stand, there`s this characteristic "blind spring" of English dowsing tradition, with 8 yang-paths radiating out of it. But funny thing; outside the church those paths are barely detectable!! Has the church been really constructed to act as a large chalice full of spiritual energies!?

Some ruined stone circles can supply us with another occasion for reflections. In empty places there are small local spiral patterns, while from neighbouring stones - still existing in our physical world - straight lines are radiating.  As if the presence of stones straightened out the spirals!? (I`m leaving here the complex radiation structure of the whole circle out) When scanning a series of appartments I confronted similar small spirals arranged in "circles". Those circular patterns were never ever used to set down a physical circle of stones. Nevertheless, the inhabitants were using those invisible patterns to enhance their living activities; driven by some unconscious urge!?

Anyway; it`d be fine, if any defender of the ley-line orthodoxy could give some blows to my opinions above!?

This is a great topic... one traditionally avoided by archaeologists because the evidence stems from individual human experience rather than the material culture left behind (which after all, is what archaeologists are studying - don't forget, Archaeology is a load of old rubbish - forgive the oft-quoted pun).

There are many traditions in different cultures which suggest there may be 'places of power', or objects or structures which are aligned with this 'power'... but what evidence do we Really have? can anybody actually demonstrate that this 'power' actually exists.... a person with a dowsing  rod is not a true demonstration - as unwittingly, on a subconscious level, people may emphasise minute movements caused by other phenomenon... i mean a test or demonstration of the power which is there - for surely, it can be shown (if it exists) (yes, Stonecarver is ever the sceptic hehe)  :)

Thanks for starting this post - you can be sure i'll keep a close eye on it and contribute.. meanwhile, i'll have to go and do some reading!

123hopp, I too will dig out some words on this subject, but, it is words that I believe to be the problem.
Ever since words have taken over from the verbal and visual picture information, the ability within us has not been as much required, words say so much ?
The bible is the biggest culprit in this way, and people actually believe every word in it?
I came across this last week in a church, when I was accused of been a witch.
The lady said it was against gods WORDS to practise dowsing, and was the work of the devil.
This brought out the devil in me, I went back at her and demonstrated how her god arrived here, she almost had a fit.
She demonstrated in detail how people have been brainwashed by words, this has been done by men bent on control and power, lusting for greed and gold.

Stonecarver, this was a wise suggestion, I have already been banned off the TMA forum, so many interested in this subject are only interested in it from a stonehead projection.
The HOLY McGRAIL charecter of the TMA, is typical of the predudice that is rampant amongst them.
Also , I note he has set off on a mission to consume LSD type drugs to learn secrets, obviously he also wants to be the ONE, the HOLY MCGRAIL that solves the age old mysteries, he won't.
It will be the ones closer to the hunters of the prehistoric people that will be atuned to what they knew, for this reason I watch carefully what the rock art people find and say, they are hunters, tuning in and recognising where they can find their quarry, using their ability, dowsers are hunters, a throw back in time.
My own dowsing is reaching ever more complex signals, and I seem able to cope with ease, I really am a neanderthal, I have been described as this by many ?

123hopp, in one of those strange coincidence things that happen, I have just this morning purchased some books on boewulf, and would like to throw these into the pot for discussion, because in this tale which I hope you will know better than me, and our dragon slaying tales , is hidden reference to dowsing, and where to find the monster grendel.
By the way, I visualise the force that runs along the lines as my two friendly dragons, so you won't find me trying to slay them, quite the opposite.

Thanks for feedback, Kevin. And what about some sceptics pretending they have 1 mln pounds to give out to first convincing traitor to the Secrets of Nature!? Or was that to first man, who gives birth to a child!? Anyway; what`s hidden in our unconsciousness should stay there; am I right!? And words help to keep the Secret, as you wrote above. Just keep smiling, Kevin. Today, religions have mainly function of providing people with "territories" to defend against the Other. And within their own territories, religions perform a positive social stabilizing function.

I hope you`ve told only to the old lady that Christ is subsequent embodiment of the Primaeval Giant idea, modelled on Osiris (ev.Dionysos) and Egyptian Ptolemaic pharaohs (e.g. Ptolemy I, the Saviour)!? Let`s remember that it is staying within the intense field of Sacred Presence, which counts and not a verbalized reason of coming to a church or a megalith structure!!

Oh, yes; and this misunderstanding about the role of mythical monsters in original (megalithic; matriarchal!?) systems of belief!! First, I`d like to remark that one-sided (positive =yang) presentation of mythical/spiritual entities, - comes probably from bards serving the warrior caste in Indoeuropean societies. It`s like "they came down to a new country without their priests and wives" situation, from which such biased narratives seem to have arisen!? Or let`s imagine a group of young warriors ("werewolves" or alike) under training in an Outer Territory, which is in "Beowulf" symbolized by the bottom of the sea. Such ideology would fit their aims - initiation through fighting a monster.

Major megalithic structures are frequently stylized to present a Womb(or sometimes a bee-hive!?), into which souls from belonging territory are coming back to load down their burden (nectar in case of "bees")and to await next assignment. Quite naturally, such sacred places should be defended by wild monsters against intruders. Maybe it`s better so; so let`s leave it this way.

Thank you, Kevin, for warning; anyway.
