Clach an Trushal Image One of the tallest standing stones of Scotland

 Hi-Res  (58Kb)

A few miles north of Callanish lies Ballantrushal, a little village with one of the tallest standing stones of Scotland. Actually, Clach an Trushal is over 6 m (20 ft) high, leaning slightly to the South. It seems that there are no geometrical connections between this stone and the other sites at Callanish, but it is reputed to mark the site of an ancient battle. A 19th century print shows several feet of peat being cut away from around the base.
On a distant hill to the East, is the Steinacleit cairn/settlement.
