STANDING STONES
Callanish V image

Five stones apparently forming the arc of a large circle, on Lewis (Western Isles). They could be part of an enclosure wall, but without excavation it is impossible to determine which kind of structure they are part of.
The stones range from 0.75m to 1m in height. The alignment of the three stones in the foreground of the photo could have been used for accurate observation of the moonrise.
The site is scattered with stones and natural boulders. Some stones have only their upper tips showing in the peat and among the heather's roots and others could be totally buried.
The Gaelic name Airigh nam Bidearan means 'Shieling (hut) of the Pinnacles'.
